The Penguins scored the games only goal of the period at the 6:53 mark on Chris Kunitz‘s 12th goal of the season with assist to Sidney Crosby (21) and Kris Letang (4).

Shots on Goal:

The Lighting outshot the Penguins 7 to 5 in the period.

Special Teams:

The Lightning power play unit  which had scored on 6 for their last 12 attempts versus the Penguins dating back to last season. The Lightning went on the power play at the 7:11 mark after Evgeni Malkin was called for an illegal equipment violation but were unable to score against the Penguins penalty kill unit which ranks 5th in the NHL with a kill rate of 85.1 (11 goals allowed in 74 attempts).

The Lightning penalty kill unit was called on at the 14:05 mark of the first period when Dana Tyrell was sent off for high sticking.  The  Lightning PK faced a tall task as the Penguins entered the game with the 4th best power play unit in the NHL scoring at a 24.2% (22 for 91). The Lightning power kill unit, which entered the game ranke 5th in the NHL killing 85.4%% (13 goals allowed in 89 attempts) of penalties was up to the task.
