Lightning Captain Decision Likely To Come In Training Camp, Notes

Who will be the next captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning? It is a question that has been asked since news of Vincent Lecavalier’s buyout broke last week. It is a question that we likely wont get an answer to until at least training camp, according to Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, who joined NHL Live Wednesday to talk all things Tampa Bay Lightning.

“We’ll get a chance, Jon Cooper and myself, to sit down and talk about it,” Yzerman told NHL Live. “We have talked about it a little bit. It will be our intention probably to wait until training camp, at some point, whether it is the beginning or end of camp to make that final decision. We’ll give it a couple months here and be ready to go with that decision in September.”

Other highlights from the interview included how Yzerman will likely approach free agency over the next couple days.

” We will explore free agency,” Yzerman said. “We really spent the day [Wednesday] on the phone touching base with several of the agents of the players that we think might be a good fit for us, just to see what they are thinking and let them know we are interested. Kind of have an idea of the ballpark as far as term and dollar amount that they be looking for and we are willing to go to. I think I have to look at some other options as well through trade.”

Yzerman went on to say some of the biggest moves the team may make are promoting players from Syracuse, pointing out they have earned the chance to make the team, and it is time to give them that opportunity.

When asked about the goaltending, Yzerman said he is not looking to add a veteran goaltender. Yzerman said both goaltenders have to play games, with the hope that one grabs the starting role.
