Tampa Bay Lightning & New York Rangers Tied 2-2 At First Intermission

The New York Rangers drew first blood at 4:30 of the period thanks to an errant pass by Radko Gudas. Gudas was attempting to clear the Lightning zone and had the pass intercepted by Derek Stepan who found Rick Nash in front of the net for the easy goal. It was Nash’s first goal in seven games and his seventh of the season.

The Lightning tied the game with a power play goal at the 10:41 mark. Valterri Filppula had the puck behind the Rangers luck and fed Teddy Purcell who one timed the puck to Tyler Johnson who drove the puck past Henrik Lundqvist. It was Johnson’s 10th goal on the season.

The Lightning took a 2-1 lead at 3:55 when Jean-Philippe Cote fed Radko Gudas who took a shot from near the blue line which Henrik Lundqvist was unable to secure. The rebound went out to Ondrej Palat who shot it past Lundqvist for his sixth goal of the season.

The Rangers scored a power play goal at the 18:25 mark when Mats Zucarella gets credit for his 9th goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2..

The Numbers:

When the opposition scores first the Lighting are 8-10-3 on the season but when they are tied  at the end of the first period they are 10-4-2.

When the Rangers score first this season they are 15-2-1 but when they are tied at the end of the first period they are only 7-7-1.

Shots On Goal:

The Lighting were held to just one shot on goal for the first 8 minutes but picked up the pace during the second half of the period and were outshot 14-12 in the period.

Special Teams:

The Lightning power play unit ranks 21st at 15.8% (21 goals in 133 attempts) while their penalty kill unit ranks tied for 9th at 85.9% (21 goals allowed in 130 attempts).

The Rangers power play unit ranks 11th at 18.9% (25 goals in 132 attempts) while their penalty kill unit ranks 6th at 85.1% (18 goals allowed in 121 attempts).

The Lightning power play unit scored in their one opportunity during the period  as Tyler Johnson scored his 10th goal of the season at the 10:41 mark with assists to Teddy Purcell (12) and Valtteri Filppula (16).

The Rangers had one power play in the period and also took advantage as Mats Zuccarello scored his 9th goal on a tip in with assists to Derick Brasard (14) and Ryan McDonagh (16).
