The Tampa Bay Lightning have wasted no time in making a splash on the eve before free agency. The Bolts have traded F Teddy Purcell to the Edmonton Oilers for F Sam Gagner. Purcell had a bit of a down year in terms of goal production but his overall puck possession stats remained the same. He ended the season with 42 points and shot at a 7.6 percent rating. What the Bolts get back in return is Gagner who shot at a 7 percent clip and scored 37 points, 10 goals.

It is a bit of a puzzling move as Lightning GM Steve Yzerman made it clear he wants to shed salary and Gagner makes more than Purcell but this move seems to be a “change of scenery” type move as of yet. There has been some speculation that Gagner will be bought out as the team would only have to pay 1/3 of his salary or buy him out with the team paying $633,33 over the next two years and $833,333 in the final two. Or it could be a move that sets up another move with a different team as of now Sam Gagner is apart of the 2014-2014 Tampa Bay Lightning.
