NEW YORK (April 7, 2013) – The Detroit Red Wings® and the Toronto Maple Leafs® will wear uniforms inspired by each team’s early years in the National Hockey League when they face off in the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® at Michigan Stadium on the University of Michigan campus on Wednesday, Jan. 1, the NHL® announced today.
The 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® jerseys, along with other NHL Winter Classic® merchandise, will arrive in stores as early as today.
Fans in Michigan can find these items at the Red Wings team stores in Joe Louis Arena, the Hockeytown Café, Hockeytown Authentics in Troy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Dunham’s Sports and Lids Locker Room, while those in Toronto and southwestern Ontario can visit the Maple Leafs team store in Air Canada Centre, Real Sports Apparel, Sport Chek, National Sports, Pro Hockey Life and Lids Locker Room. 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® merchandise also will be available at the NHL Powered by Reebok Store in New York City and online at Shop.NHL.com, Shop.Canada.NHL.com, IceJerseys.com and JerseyCity.ca.
The Red Wings will wear iconic red and antique white uniforms featuring a striping pattern and arch Detroit wordmark inspired by the late-1920s Detroit Cougars™. The front crest is an early iteration of the winged wheel from the late 1930s, featuring a novelty felt appliqué with a distinct chain stitch embroidery. The custom Detroit wordmark and number system is a nod to the exclusive typeface worn by the Red Wings during the early 1980’s. The Red Wings’ iconic diamond shape captain patch pays homage to the team’s memorable heritage and the legends who wore it over the years.
The Maple Leafs will wear a royal blue and white unique uniform design and distinct striping configuration inspired by the Leafs circa the 1930s, a time when the franchise won its first Stanley Cup® as the newly named Toronto Maple Leafs. The front crest is a felt appliqué with a very distinct wordmark from the inaugural Maple Leafs logo, revealed in 1927.
This particular neckline design is taken from the memorable sweaters worn throughout the 1960s and the reverse lace-up detail is unique to the Maple Leafs’ heritage. The iconic running stitch detail on the number system is a tribute to the Leafs sweater from the mid-1950s.
“Each year, our NHL Winter Classic® uniform designs set out to honor and pay respect to the rich history of the game and the teams taking part in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®,” said Brian Jennings, NHL Executive Vice President of Marketing. “Each NHL Winter Classic® uniform is an embodiment of that team’s core brand values and represents memorable milestones in that team’s history. To our fans, the NHL Winter Classic® jersey is the ultimate keepsake from this extraordinary event and with two Original Six™ franchises participating this year, we have created something quite special.”
The uniforms that Red Wings and Maple Leafs alumni will wear in the Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings Alumni Showdown™ at Comerica Park as part of the SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival™ will be familiar to fans. The Red Wings will wear the home version of the retro uniforms worn in the 2009 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® – a single white body stripe inspired by the jerseys initially worn by the Detroit Cougars circa 1926-27. Maple Leafs alumni will wear modern versions of the uniforms worn in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s when the Leafs played in the Norris Division.
“Reebok’s NHL Winter Classic® jersey is one of the key elements to help make the NHL Winter Classic® so unique, bringing back tradition and calling out memorable moments of the past for both teams. We are very proud to once again be a part of this historic occasion in sports. The 2014 match up will be especially exciting taking place at Michigan Stadium as the Detroit Red Wings take on their Canadian rival the Toronto Maple Leafs,”
said Keith Leach, NHL Go To Market Director for Reebok. “In addition to the uniforms, we will continue to bring fans additional apparel offerings, including the highly sought after Reebok NHL Winter Classic® knit hats and other unique merchandise styles which capture the teams’ identities.”
The 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® is anticipated to set a world record for attendance at a hockey game. Nicknamed The Big House®, Michigan Stadium is the largest of its kind in North America. The game will be broadcast live at 1:00 p.m. ET on NBC in the U.S. and on CBC and RDS in Canada.
In partnership with the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®, downtown Detroit is expected to host more than 250,000 visitors at the SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival™, an outdoor celebration of hockey held at Comerica Park beginning in mid-December.
The centerpiece of the festival will be an outdoor rink placed on the infield of the ballpark that will feature games between teams representing every level of hockey and opportunities for open skating for the public.
The showcase event at the festival promises to be the two games featuring notable alumni of the Red Wings and Maple Leafs – the Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings Alumni Showdown™ – on New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 31. In total, the SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival™ is expected to feature youth games, high school hockey games, sled hockey games, AHL games, an OHL game, the 48th Annual Great Lakes Invitational and more.
