Six Florida Panthers Selected to Play in 2013 World Championship
Bjugstad (USA), Campbell (Canada), Fleischmann (Czech Republic), Goc (Germany), Kopecky (Slovakia) & Markstrom (Sweden) to Compete for Gold
SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers F Nick Bjugstad (USA), D Brian Campbell (Canada), F Tomas Fleischmann (Czech Republic), F Marcel Goc (Germany), F Tomas Kopecky (Slovakia) and G Jacob Markstrom (Sweden) will represent their respective countries at the upcoming 2013 IIHF World Hockey Championship, that will take place May 3-19 in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland.
Bjugstad, 20, played in 11 games (1-0-1) for Florida this season, after completing his junior year at the University of Minnesota. He scored the first goal of his NHL career on Apr. 27 at Tampa Bay. On the international level, Bjugstad earned a Bronze medal for USA at the 2011 World Junior Championship (WJC), recording four points (2-2-4) in six games. The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native also appeared in the 2012 WJC scoring four goals with two assists.
Campbell, 33, appeared in all 48 games for Florida this season, leading the club’s defensemen with 27 points (8-19-27). The London, Ontario, native has yet to appear in a World Championship for Team Canada, but did play for Canada in the 1999 WJC, earning a Silver medal.
Fleischmann, 28, played in all 48 games for Florida this season and paced the Panthers with 35 points (12-23-35). The Koprivinice, Czech Republic, native has represented his country on the international level on several occasions, playing in the 2010 Winter Olympics, as well the World Championships (2008) and WJC (2003 & 2004).
Goc, 29, played in 42 games for Florida this season recording 19 points (9-10-19). The Calw, Germany, native has extensive experience playing on the international level, representing Germany at the Winter Olympics (2006 & 2010), WJC (2001 & 2003), World Cup of Hockey (2004) and World Championship six times (2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012) including serving as team captain of the German squad at last year’s tournament.
Kopecky, 31, played in 47 games for Florida this season, registering 27 points (15-12-27), while leading the Panthers in goals. On the international level, Kopecky earned a Silver medal with Team Slovakia in last year’s World Championship. The Ilava, Slovakia, native has also represented his country at the 2010 Winter Olympics, as well as WJC (2000-2002).
Markstrom, 23, posted an 8-14-1 mark in 23 games with Florida this season. The Gavle, Sweden, native earned a Bronze medal for his country at the 2010 World Championship, going 3-0 with a 1.33 GAA and one shutout. He also earned a Silver medal (2009) and Bronze medal (2010) in WJC competition.
