Video: Will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Trade Up in the NFL Draft?

NFL Draft week is upon us, and that means a flurry of activity on social media, including some last-minute mocks and an ever-churning rumor mill that has produced reports of Mike Glennon being put on the trade block and Johnny Manziel being linked to virtually every team in the top 10.

At Sports Talk Florida, we’re here to help you sort through all the madness as best as we can, which means it’s time to open up the mailbag for our weekly question.

There is always a rare possibility of trading up, but with six picks, the Bucs don’t exactly have much ammunition to work with, especially with no fourth-round pick or any compensatory picks.

If you look at the NFL Draft Value Chart, which still serves as a guideline for draft trades, if the Bucs wanted to trade up to, say, the third overall pick, they’d have to essentially part ways with their second and third round picks. With a number of needs on the offensive side of the ball, including offensive line, wide receiver, tight end and quarterback (unless they’re truly content with Josh McCown) that doesn’t sound like such a good idea.

Even moving up two spots, from seven to five, would likely mean parting ways with a third-round pick. Of course, you could somehow package Mike Glennon in there, and things could get really interesting. He is rumored to be on the trade block, and just because he might not fit the bill for Jeff Tedford’s offense doesn’t mean he couldn’t slide in and start somewhere else.

Bottom line though — based on general manager Jason Licht’s recent comments (and you can take them for what they’re worth, given that teams don’t really show their hand this close to the draft),  I don’t see the Bucs pulling the trigger to climb any higher than No. 7.

And as far as Licht’s comments, he was asked about his first season being in an NFL war room and what he learned from it as he heads into his first NFL Draft as a GM.

He said, “I learned from a lot of different people and I guess the number one thing – I was thinking about this last night – just be patient. Be patient and don’t get anxious and don’t stress. Let it come to you. Lovie tells me that every day.”

Does that sound like a man that’s eager to move up or stay put?
