Philbin On The Dolphins Injury Woes

Miami Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin spoke with the media on Friday about the Nate Kaeding signing and the teams injury bug.

(On signing Nate Kaeding today) – “He has demonstrated a record of success as a kicker in this league. He’s a hard worker. He’s a true professional and I’m sure he’ll do a great job for us.”

(On if the team reached out to Kaeding yesterday) – “Yeah, I’m not exactly sure. I’m not exactly sure of the exact timeline, so I don’t want to give you any information that’s not correct, but yeah I’m sure he’ll do well.”

(On placing three players on the Injured Reserve this week and if he feels the team is snake-bitten) – “No, not at all. Not at all. It’s a demanding game and unfortunately guys get injured in this game. That’s just the landscape of the profession. So it’s unfortunate for the players. I’ve stated before these guys work awful hard. They make a lot of sacrifices. It’s a demanding job on their bodies and you hate to see a guy that works hard not able to continue to play. SO it’s tough for those guys, but unfortunately that’s the world they live in so to speak.”

(On how tough it is to have conversation with players going on IR) – “Kind of what I just mentioned, you feel for players. They want to contribute. We operate the program under the assumption that these guys want to be coached, they want to be great football players, they want to be part of a first-class organization and they want to win and they want to contribute. So when they can’t do that, it’s tough.”

(On how impressive it was the way Dan Carpenter rebounded after a tough start to the season for him) – “I’m not surprised. I think I’ve stated many times, he’s a true professional as well. I like the way he goes about his business. It’s very important to him. He does a great job representing this franchise on and off the field and it’s unfortunate for him.”

(On players not practicing during the week and it being hard for him to play on Sunday as a result and if Randy Starks’ situation is different because it’s a non-football injury) – “Well, again, we’ll see how things go. Every situation is different and we’ll evaluate that right up to the time we have to determine who are our exact 46 guys are. We’ll make the best decision for the football team at that point.”

(On if he suggested signing Kaeding as a result of his relationship with him from University of Iowa) – “Not necessarily, no. I’ve got other things on my mind. I don’t necessarily pay attention to exactly who’s… That’s not really my jurisdiction anyway. But certainly when his name came up, I was familiar with it.”

(On Kaeding being an All-American at Iowa) – “Yeah, he’s a hard worker… I remember visiting with him in San Diego last year, when he was hurt, before the game and he’s a pro. He’s a pro.”

(On if it was comforting having Brian Hartline back at practice today) – “Sure, it was good to have him out there. Absolutely.”
