Kafka Has A Chance To Win Jags Starting Job

Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell was asked to assess the chances of Mike Kafka, who was claimed off waivers this week from the Patriots, and hasn’t taken a snap of work in team drills with his new club yet.

He replied that Kafka had “just as good an opportunity” to win the starting job as Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne or undrafted rookie Matt Scott, via Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com.

While that’s a recognition that the 25-year-old Kafka has some skills, it’s also a tacit admission that they haven’t been blown away with Gabbert or Henne.

It’s one thing to have an open competition, but the fact a guy can walk in off the street and be on equal footing with a former first-round pick speaks volumes.
