Yankees Outlast Rally, Still Within Reach Of Rays

Yankees_Robinson_Cano_2013 [1]The multicolored out-of-town scoreboard that sits atop the right-field wall at Camden Yards is a constant reminder, beaming scores of relevant games directly into the Yankees’ dugout.

Even as the Yankees have been concentrating on the events unfolding in their own games here, it has been almost impossible for them not to see what was happening in other baseball cities around the country, particularly St. Petersburg, Fla., where the Tampa Bay Rays were playing the Boston Red Sox.

“It’s really hard for me not to see it,” Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said before the game. “Because, where I stand and where it’s at, I would have to be looking straight down not to see it.”

On Thursday, as the Yankees were battling their way toward a tense, rain-delayed 6-5 victory, they could see on that scoreboard that the Rays had beaten the Red Sox at Tropicana Field, meaning the Yankees would have to wait at least one more day to catch them, if they ever do.
