Yankees Acquire Chase Headley From Padres
The New York Yankees today announced they have acquired switch-hitting 3B Chase Headley and cash considerations from the San Diego Padres in exchange for INF Yangervis Solarte and RHP Rafael De Paula.
Headley, 30, hit .229 (64-for-279) with 27R, 12 doubles, 1 triple, 7HR and 32RBI in 77 games with San Diego this season. Since July 4, he is batting .339 (19-for-56) with 5R, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1HR and 8RBI in 13 games.
In 908 career games over parts of eight Major League seasons (2007-14) all with the Padres Headley batted .266 (873-for-3,286) with 398R, 186 doubles, 13 triples, 87HR and 401RBI, while appearing in games at third base (680), left field (196) and first base (two).
In 2012, he earned his first career Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards as a third baseman, batting .286 (173-for-604) with 95R, 31 doubles, 2 triples, 31HR and an NL-leading 115RBI in 161 games with the Padres. His .976 fielding percentage as a third baseman was second-highest in the NL (424TC, 10E).
The Fountain, Colo., native was originally selected by the Padres in the second round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. He owns a .965 career fielding percentage at third base (1,676TC, 58E), the third-best mark among active Major Leaguers at the position behind only Eric Chavez (.970) and Evan Longoria (.966).
Solarte, 27, made his Major League debut this season, batting .254 (64-for-252) with 26R, 14 doubles, 6HR and 31RBI in 75 games with the Yankees. He also appeared in five games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he hit .600 (12-for-20) with 3 doubles, 1 triple and 5RBI. He was signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent on January 16, 2014.
De Paula, 23, was 6-5 with a 4.15 ERA (89.0IP, 41ER) in 20 games (17 starts) with Single-A Tampa this season. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent on November 18, 2010.
