BACK IN THE WORLD SERIES: The Red Sox will be participating in their 12th World Series, 1st since 2007, when they meet the National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals beginning tonight at Fenway Park…With 12 appearances in the World Series, the Red Sox pass the Detroit Tigers for the 6th most behind the Yankees (40), Cardinals (19), Giants (19), Dodgers (18), and Athletics (15).
- The Red Sox are 7-4 in 11 previous trips to the Fall Classic…The 7 World Series titles are tied with the Giants for 4th most all-time behind the Yankees (27), Cardinals (11), and Athletics (9).
WORST TO WORLD CHAMPS: The 2013 Red Sox are looking to join the 1991 Twins as the only teams ever to win a World Series one season after finishing in last place.
NATIONAL ISSUES: Boston went 14-6 (.700) in 20 games against the NL this year, the best Interleague mark among AL teams in 2013 and 2nd in the majors (PIT, 15-5, .750)…The Sox won 8 of their 10 Interleague matchups at home.
- The Sox offense led MLB with a .302 AVG, .364 OBP, .857 OPS, and 118 runs scored in Interleague games.
- Boston had a 2.75 ERA vs. the NL…Sox starters held opponents to 2 runs or fewer in 16 of those 20 games.
DAVID THE 3RD: David Ortiz, who has started all 67 Red Sox postseason games since 2003, will become the 9th player to appear in at least 3 World Series for the team, the 1st since 3 players did it in 1915, 1916, and 1918…Only Harry Hooper has appeared in more (4, 1912-18).
- This will be Ortiz’s 15th postseason series as a Red Sox, passing Jason Varitek (14) for the club record.
