Wil Myers first career home run was a grand slam to give the Rays a 5-3 lead in the top of the 6th inning. That would be the highlight of the day as the Rays bullpen let another late inning lead evaporate as the Rays fell to the New York Yankees by a final score of 7-5. Joel Peralta (1-3, 3.21 ERA) takes the loss and the record drops to 38-37 on the season. C.C. Sabathia (8.5-, 4.09 ERA) got the victory and Mariano Rivera picked up his 26th save on the year as the Yankees improve to 41-33 on the year.
Alex Colome made his second career start and was let down by his defense and by his lack of control. He worked 4.1 innings allowing 3R/0ER on 5 hits striking out 3 and walking 5.
He was given a 1-0 lead to work with on Evan Longoria ‘s 17th home run on the year, a solo home run to lead off the top of the 2nd inning.
The Yankees came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third loading the bases thanks to an error by Alex Colome to allow the first batter of the inning to reach base. The extra out paid off for the Yankees as Zoilo Almonte delivered a 2-out 2-RBI single and the Yankees had the lead.
The Yankees took advantage of another Rays defensive miscue in the bottom of the 5th, this time a botched double play ball by James Loney , to put themselves in hot water again. With Robinson Cano at 1st base Travis Hafner sent a grounder to James Loney who threw wildly to second base allowing Cano to advance to 3rd and Hafner to reach safely. Colome walked Lyle Overbay to load the bases and followed with a walk to Zoilo Almonte to extend the Yankees lead to 3-1. Alex Torres came in to replace Colome and struck out Jayson Nix and David Adams to end the inning.
The Rays came charging back in the top of the 6th inning off C.C. Sabathia who has struggled this season facing a lineup the third time through. He issued a leadoff walk to Sam Fuld and a double to Desmond Jennings to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Sabathia was up to the task striking out Sean Rodriguez and getting Ben Zobrist to pop out to Lyle Overbay in foul territory. Joe Girardi had Sabathia intentionally walk Evan Longoria to bring Wil Myers to the plate with the bases loaded. Myers responded by delivering his first major league home run, a grand slam, off the top of the fence in right to give the Rays a 5-3 lead.
After Alex Torres worked a perfect 6th inning and with 5 left handed hitters due up Joe Maddon elected to bring in Joel Peralta who has held left handed batters to a .169 average (11 for 65) on the year. Unfortunately, he did not have his command and issued two walks and a hit while only retiring 1 hitter and departing the game wit the bases loaded for Jake McGee .
Jake McGee walked David Adams to plate 1-run to cut the Rays lead to 5-4. Vernon Wells came in to pinch hit for Chris Stewart and delivered what appeared to be a ground rule double which would have plated just 2 runs but the umpires said that it was fan interference and with that they had the ability to use their discretion on how many runs would have scored and they allowed all 3 runs to count giving the Yankees a 7-5 lead.
