The Red Sox won their eighth world championship in franchise history Wednesday night after finishing last in the American League East in 2012, and impacted the city of Boston through their determination and perseverance after the Boston Marathon bombing.
After finishing last year with a 69-93 record, who would have thought that the Boston Red Sox would suddenly turn around and become world champions the following year? Be honest.
Not only did the Red Sox win the World Series, but they tied the National League champion St. Louis Cardinals for the best record in baseball this year, finishing 97-65.
The 2013 Red Sox redefined history, going from worst-to-first, and winning the 2013 World Series.
Only one team in the history of baseball has won the World Series after finishing last in their division the previous year, the 1991 Minnesota Twins who defeated the Atlanta Braves.
Now the Red Sox join the Twins in baseball history. Something to remember, right?
Not only did the Red Sox make history, but the championship has impacted so many Red Sox fans and the city of Boston after the tragedy that unfolded on April 15.
The city was left in shock and devastation after the Boston Marathon bombing.
Throughout the 2013 season, the Red Sox honored those affected that day by wearing a patch on their uniform sleeves saying “Boston Strong,” and those words perfectly defined their season.
After winning the American League East with ease, the Red Sox disposed of the Tampa Bay Rays in the Division Series, the defending American League champion Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series, and finally, defeated the Cardinals in six games to win their first World Series at Fenway Park in how long? 95 years!
Off the field, the Red Sox made various visits during the season to survivors of the Boston Marathon.
“This is our livelihood and we’re here to play and win, but at the same time, we can’t forget about who’s out there supporting us. At the end of the year, yeah, we’ll fly to different places, but we’re still a team and still a family, and we’ll always remember this,” said Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
The Red Sox proved this season that their heart and determination is as epic as the city of Boston, and the players have shown on and off the field what being Bostonians is all about.
