White Sox Sign Jose Dariel Abreu
The White Sox have agreed to a deal with Cuban first baseman Jose Dariel Abreu for six years and $68MM, pending a physical.
The Red Sox, Astros, Rangers, Marlins and Giants all reportedly showed interest in Abreu but the White Sox ultimately were able to lure him in. Abreu's contract is the largest ever given to an international free agent and easily tops the seven-year, $42MM contract Yasiel Puig received from the Dodgers last year.
Abreu, 26, is highly regarded for his power, as Athletics assistant GM David Forst favorably compared Abreu to Ryan Howard. However, some experts have had concerns about Abreu's bat speed and many have been critical of his athleticism and defense.
