For just a moment Sunday, the Bucs were in contention against one of the hottest teams in the NFC, thanks to the heroics of rookie tight end Tim Wright. On the first play of the fourth quarter, he caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Glennon on a corner route, inching the Bucs within six points of the 49ers.
“It’s a play we practiced all week and everybody did their job on that play. The line held up, other guys ran their routes well, I ran my route well, Glennon delivered and we scored,” Wright said after the game.
Operating out of the no-huddle offense, Glennon completed eight of nine passes on that scoring drive for 89 yards. The Bucs also ran the no-huddle just before halftime when Glennon drove the ball 80 yards down the field, connecting with Vincent Jackson on an 11-yard touchdown.
Wright believes it was tempo that worked in the Bucs’ favor on both scoring drives.
“I feel like, you know, we just outplayed them on tempo. It’s something that is an ally for us. When we use it, it definitely is something that gets opponents on their heels,” Wright said. “We’ve just got to keep working the tempo, connect as an offense, and try to correct those minor mistakes and keep moving forward.”
Aside from the two scoring drives that totaled 172 yards, the Bucs netted just 11 yards on offense.
