The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a unique problem. With Doug Martin, Mike James, Bobby Rainey -- three starting-caliber backs -- plus Jeff Demps and Charles Sims, they've got to figure out how to usethem. Bucs running backs coach Tim Spencer called it one of thedeepest running back classes [he's] had since he's been in the league, whichdoes carry some weight since he worked with the likes of Matt Forte and Thomas Jones in Chicago.
Spencer indicated that the team wouldn't be employing a one-back system as previously used by Greg Schiano. "We don't want a guy to have 30 touches every game because we'd wear him out before we get to game 16-plus. We need to sort of divide them up. But if a guy is going good, we're going to let him roll, there's no question about that. We would like to be able to have a couple guys in there that we could mix and match..."
Spencer talked about the unique skills that each back brings to the table, with James being big and physical, Demps with "unbelievable speed" and Rainey being able to do "a lot of everything." He also spoke highly of rookie Sims, noting his great hands and saying, "he'll make you look stupid out there with some of his moves."
