Utley, Phillies Discussing Multi-Year Deal

Chase Utey and the Phillies have been discussing deals for three years or two years plus a vesting option for a third that would pay Utley in the neighborhood of $13 million a year, sources said.

Leading up to the trade deadline, the Phillies have been telling teams Utley is unavailable as they aim to lock him up on the multi-year deal. People familiar with the negotiation suggest the offers were modeled after Carlos Beltran’s $13-million a year deal with the Cardinals, though Beltran’s is only a straight two-year deal.
