Uruguay striker Luis Suarez aims to be healthy for FIFA World Cup

The Premier League’s player of the year said he will be ready to go when the FIFA World Cup rolls around.
Uruguay and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez had knee surgery to repair meniscus damage he suffered during national team practice on Wednesday.
But despite the surgery coming less than a month before the tournament is set to kick off, Uruguay’s first match is June 14 against Costa Rica, Suarez and the Uruguay Football Association claim the striker will try and be ready to go.
“Suarez might be ready to play in Brazil,” the FA released in a statement.
Suarez himself was much more confident that he would return in time for the World Cup, thanking all his fans in an interview with Uruguayan newspaper Ovacion.
“Be calm, I am going to get there,” Suarez said in the interview. “Thanks for all your support. I am going to work really hard in the coming days to be at 100 percent and help my teammates.”
This past season Suarez tied the Premier League record for most goals scored in a 38 match season with 31, and was set to be one of the top players heading to Brazil this summer.
But the injury concern could dampen the chances of the Uruguayan national team, who are currently ranked No. 6 in the FIFA World Rankings.
But Wilmar Valdez, President of the Uruguay FA, said Suarez might be able to return quickly.
“We know the surgery was a success and that the injury is not serious … These are injures that, considering Suarez’s fitness and if the recovery is good, will not take long for him to return and play,” Valdez said in an interview with Ovacion.
Suarez is likely to be a major story in Brazil, whether healthy or not, because of his goalscoring ability and history of controversy.
Whether it be biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during the 2012-13 season or punching a last second shot off that line that would have eliminated Uruguay from the 2010 World Cup, Suarez is never far from making headlines.
Should Suarez miss time the slack will fall on the shoulders of Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani and Cerezo Osaka striker Diego Forlan, who won the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup.
Following the match against Costa Rica, Uruguay will face England June 19 before finish the group stages against Italy June 24.Uruguay striker Luis Suarez aims to be healthy for FIFA World Cup by Daniel Rogers
