UCF Takes Center Stage On Pro Day
ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) It began at 6:30 a.m. with the arrival of the ESPN trucks, and when UCF Pro Day concluded late in the afternoon, several Knights had shown off their skills in hopes of landing a spot on an NFL club this summer.
In all, national media outlets such as ESPN, FOX Sports, NBC Sports, NFL Network, NFL Films, USA Today, Associated Press, Yahoo Sports, Sports Illustrated and Sirius XM were on hand, while several other journalists from around the country were inside Nicholson Fieldhouse as well.
The action kicked off in the weight room at 1 p.m. before transitioning to the fieldhouse where the Knights ran the 40 and worked out for NFL personnel. Plenty of media attention was on Oviedo native Blake Bortles, who has been projected to be a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft (starts May 8). The Knights highest selection in program history, and their lone first-round pick, was Daunte Culpepper who was tagged by the Minnesota Vikings with the 11th pick in 1999.
While Bortles grabbed the spotlight from the media, NFL scouts knew the talent that comes out of a George OLeary program is very rich so they put a keen eye on all of the Knights in action. A total of seven seniors on last years roster worked out Wednesday including offensive linemen Chris Martin, Jordan McCray and Justin McCray, wide receiver Jeff Godfrey, defensive lineman E.J. Dunston and defensive backs Sean Maag and Michael Patrick.
Another Knight who captured the attention of NFL scouts was running back Storm Johnson, who was voted on to the 2013 Al-American Athletic Conference First Team thanks to 1,139 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.
The 2014 edition of the Knights return to work Thursday with practice scheduled for 10-12 p.m. UCF is currently in its second week of spring camp, which culminates in the UCFamily Spring Game Saturday, April 12, at 2 p.m. Before the contest, which is free for all fans, make sure to stop by one of several food trucks that will be stationed southeast of Bright House Networks Stadium.
