UCF Surge Can Be Credited to Recruiting Class of 2010

The way Jeffrey Godfrey’s career started at UCF it looked like he could have become the program’s most storied player. As a freshman the highly-touted prospect from Miami Central led the Knights into the Top 25 polls. He led the Knights to a Conference USA title and a victory over Georgia in the Liberty Bowl.
The story of Godfrey has been written many times (you can read it here ) but what’s often ignored is how much weight his named carried as the Knights closed out its recruiting class of 2010, arguably the best class in program history.
Godfrey was a superstar in the youth leagues of Miami and when he enrolled at Central he established a foundation at a program that has built into a national power. He was also the foundation of the Knights’ 2010 recruiting class. The 2010 class included a major influx of talent from Miami-Dade County, many of whom admitted to following Godfrey.
Three starters on the offensive line – Torian Wilson, Justin McCray and Jordan McCray – are from the 2010 recruiting class. All three players are from Miami. Godfrey has moved from starting quarterback to starting slot receiver and his move made room for Blake Bortles, another member of the 2010 recruiting class.
The 2010 would be the first of two classes primarily constructed by former assistant David Kelly that have shaped the current Knights roster as they head into arguably the biggest home game in program history against South Carolina.
Starters like E.J. Dunston and Clayton Geathers also came from the 2010 class while guys like J.J. Worton, Miles Pace and Breshad Perriman were part of the 2011 class along with running back Storm Johnson, who transferred to the program from Miami.
The recruiting class of 2010 came in with a splash and has a chance to leave Orlando with the ultimate reward of a BCS Bowl. Collectively they have changed the face of UCF football. Last Saturday the Knights earned their first ever victory over a Big 10 opponent, a 34-31 victory at Penn State. Next Saturday the Knights can earn a victory over a top 10 SEC opponent and on October 18 the Knights can put themselves in position to win the American Athletic Conference with a victory over Louisville.
When the 2010 class came into UCF there it was with the belief that that group could change the profile of the program. As the 2013 season unravels, the chance for that class to leave an everlasting legacy is upon us.UCF Surge Can Be Credited to Recruiting Class of 2010 by Corey Long
