Insider: UCF Keys to Getting Back on Track
If the Knights want to reach the C-USA Championship Game and defend their conference title, they must improve in the following:
Only averaging 18 points per game against Division 1-A Competition and in the 3 losses have only scored 44 points which is less then 15 points per game. The passing game has only produced 3 touchdown passes in the first six games which are among the bottom of college football. Offense line last season gave up only 20 sacks in 14 games. This season in 6 games UCF has already given up 14 sacks.
The lack of Pass Rush has hurt the Knights especially in the SMU Loss and will have to get better. Through first 6 games UCF has recorded only 7 sacks as a team. In 2010 UCF had 32 sacks in 14 games. One of those sacks has been made by defense end which was by Darius Nall who had 8.5 last season. The Knights clearly have missed two time C-USA Defensive Player of the year Bruce Miller who had 8.5 sacks last season and forced constant double teams.
Special Teams has been the biggest problem. Punt Return averaged just 2 yards a punt return while giving up 24 yards a punt return and rank in the 100s nationally in punt and kick return coverage and returns. In comparison, in 2010 UCF averaged 27 yards a kick return and 13 yards a punt return while only given up an average of 8 yards a punt return and 17.5 yards on kick returns.
If The Knights want to return to the C-USA Championship Game and win their 2nd straight conference title, they must improve in those areas of the game. Otherwise, the Knights will have to settle for a "what could have been" season.
