UCF Football: Previewing Non-Conference Schedule
The University of Central Florida is now officially a member of the American Athletic Conference, and the 2013 football season is quickly approaching. Just two months away from that first kickoff, we will begin to preview UCF?s schedule, beginning with the non-conference games.
The 2013 season will begin at Bright House Stadium against a familiar opponent ? University of Akron. UCF annihilated the Zips 56-14 in last season?s opener. Akron went on to win only one game last season, and was winless in Middle Atlantic Conference games.
UCF will face another familiar opponent in week two when they travel to Miami to face Florida International University. The Knights won last season?s matchup against the Panthers 33-20, as QB Blake Bortles had has his best career game-to-date. The sophomore completed 20 passes for 251 yards, including two touchdowns in the air.
Following the road game against FIU, the Knights will travel to Happy Valley for the first of two scheduled games against Penn State. The teams agreed to terms to play a home-and-home series over the next two seasons. It is all-but-official that the 2014 contest, a home game for the Knights, will be played in Ireland.
In the first full season after the Joe Paterno era, the Nittany Lions went 8-4 with a 6-2 record in Big 10 games. The Knights are 0-2 all-time against PSU, but the two teams haven?t faced off since 2004.
One of the more anticipated home games of the 2013 season will come in week four when the University of South Carolina heads to Orlando. The Knights have not faired-well in three games against the Gamecocks, losing each matchup. South Carolina has outscored UCF 90-60 in those three games, and have not seen each other since 2005.
