The Knights have had a lot to celebrate lately. Not only are they celebrating their best season in program history, but now players and coaches are being nationally recognized.
Quarterback Blake Bortles has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Bortles came out on top over Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville, who was a Heisman favorite at the start of the season. Bortles passed for more than 3,000 yards and completed over 68% of his passes. NFL recruiters are currently scouting him as a top prospect.
Aside from Bortles’ accolades, Knights Head Coach George O’Leary was named the AAC Coach of the Year for leading his team to their first ever BCS bowl bid in the Fiesta Bowl. O’Leary celebrates an undefeated season in AAC play and 11-1 overall. He’s been a head coach for 17 years and this is his 6th time being named as coach of the year for the AAC.
Some exceptional Knights have also been named to the AAC first team–OL Jordan McCray, RB Storm Johnson, LB Terrance Plummer, QB Blake Bortles, and CB Jacoby Glenn.
15th ranked Central Florida will face number 6 Baylor in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 1st at 6:30 MST in Glendale, AZ. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
