UCF Baseball Sweeps Siena

The UCF baseball team swept Siena this past weekend in their opening series, playing in front of 4,678 fans during the series.

Winning Fridays game 8-1, Saturdays game 11-4 and Sundays game 9-6, the Knights were able produce well with the bats. With some outstanding individual offensive performances, the Knights were led by freshman Kam Gellinger, who reached base in all eight at-bats. For Gellinger, his weekend was highlight by a two-run homerun in his first collegiate at-bat.

Not only did the team have a great offensive start, but they played well defensively too. In Fridays opener, junior starting pitcher Erik Skoglund shut down Siena, allowing one run over six stellar innings. He knew there would be a lot more responsibility on his shoulders being the veteran arm on the staff. I have to teach the new pitchers what to do,Skoglund said.

After the series head coach Terry Rooney said that the team spoke about a Championship Sunday and what it all means. What we mean by that, what we've done on Friday and Saturday leads up to what we're going to do on that third day in a row. Rooney continued to say, This was a back and forth game and I thought it was a total team effort in every way.

With all the new faces on the team Rooney wanted to make sure everyone was able to get in and play. We just need to teach them as best as we can, he said. Teach them things to win and be successful.

Overall, the Knights were able to pull out some outstanding performances this past weekend, with all-star performances from numerous players. The Knights continue their season on Tuesday in Gainesville against a ranked Florida team.
