Fresh off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011, it has been a good offseason for UCF Head Baseball Coach Terry Rooney. Recently Rooney’s latest recruiting class was ranked 17th in the nation by Baseball America. This week, he is wrapping up fall ball practice with the Black & Gold Series from October 26-28.
The Knights last season went 39-23 on the season making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 going 1-2 in the Tallahassee Regional. One of the questions Rooney hopes to get answered by the end of the fall is who will be his starting catcher, as the Knights will have to replace last year’s starter Beau Taylor, who was drafted by the Oakland A’s in the 5th Round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Coach Rooney hopes to have a very deep pitching staff with his returning ace, Junior lefty Brian Adkins leading the way along, with newcomers Freshmen Garrett Nuss, Eric Skoglund, and Junior transfer Chris Matulis, who is transferring from LSU and was drafted in the 29th round by the St Louis Cardinals in this past year MLB Draft but picked UCF over MLB.
I had a chance to Interview Rooney on the ESPN 1080 Insiders Show on Sunday to discuss his recruiting class, as well as some of the players returning from last season. We also discussed what he hoped to accomplish before the conclusion of fall and much more.
