Tuck: Top 20 College Basketball Champions In The Last 20 Years

Kentucky is your 2011-12 national champions of college basketball.  The Wildcats played 7 guys, 6 of which were underclassmen.  It was a very talented team, but not an all-time great team.  They were very good in a lot of areas, but had enough flaws to be exposed by older, stronger, and better shooting teams.  As much as you compliment them for sharing the basketball and playing defense, the lack of a go-to guy also hurts them in this measurement in my opinion.

The title of the column is basketball champions.  If I were to include all teams over the last 20 years, I think half this list would be eliminated or pushed down the ladder.  There have been some great non-champions.  I think a case could be made that 1999 Duke was the best team of the last 20 years.  Also I would include 1997 Kansas, 1993 Michigan, 2006 UConn, 2010 Kentucky, 2005 Illinois, 2002 Duke, 1996 UMass, 1998 Duke, 2008 Memphis, and 2012 North Carolina.

Here is how I think they stack up over the last 20 years.  And yes, all these teams are great in their own right.  (And by the way, if it was 22 years, both 1991 UNLV and 1992 Duke would be in the top 5.)

20. 2011 UConn

19. 2010 Duke

18. 1994 Arkansas

17. 2004 UConn

16. 1998 Kentucky

15. 1997 Arizona

14. 2008 Kansas

13. 1993 North Carolina

12. 2012 Kentucky

11. 2006 Florida

10. 2000 Michigan State

9. 2003 Syracuse

8. 2002 Maryland

7. 2005 North Carolina

6. 1995 UCLA

5. 2007 Florida

4. 2009 North Carolina

3. 1999 UConn

1. 1996 Kentucky
