Tuck: Tiger Woods Great At Being Good

Tiger Woods hasn’t won a major since 2008. 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 no major wins. Why write it out? Just so you recognize how long it has been. 4 majors a year, and none of them end with a Tiger fist-pump.
So one conclusion is that Tiger has failed. After all, golf has one winner and a lot of losers each week, right?
Of course, that’s like reading the headline, but not the whole story. I just thought this homework was worth pointing out.
Tiger Woods has finished in the top 6 nine times since 2009.
Lee Westwood has done it 7 times. So has Phil Mickelson.
Jason Dufner, finally won his first major, the PGA Championship this weekend. It was his 5th top 6 finish. Adam Scott has 5 top 6 finishes as well. Rory McIlroy too.
Ernie Els finished top 4 four times. Jason Day did too.
That’s pretty impressive competing by all those guys. It’s also shows how hard it is to win and to even come close to winning in a PGA major. 20 majors and I think it’s worth bragging about finishing in the top 6 just 4 times. Tiger did it 9 times.
By comparison, Darren Clarke, Stewart Cink, and Charl Schwartzel have only finished in the top 6 one time each since 2009. Difference between them and Tiger Woods is that their one was finishing in first place.
I bring it up to ask the question, what would be our take on take on Tiger if he had won a major in the last 5 years, but it was the only time he finished near the top of the leaderboard?
Historically speaking, Tiger would be better off with the one major win than the 9 top 6 finishes. But as far as his hope of winning not one, but multiple more majors, I think the 9 top 6 finishes is an indicator he has a decent chance. If you keep giving yourself a chance to win, the more likely you are to win. Same goes for Lee Westwood, who eventually will win one, and maybe more than one if he keeps playing this well.
All of this is no condolence to Tiger Woods and his fans, but I think he still has a chance to win majors, not just one, but maybe 2, 3, 4, or 5???
I’d bet on him over others that haven’t come close recently. Tiger Woods was great at being great, and now he’s become great at being good. Eventually he’ll be great in a major again.
