FSU QB Jameis Winston helped lead the Seminoles to a perfect 13-0 season. He broke the passing yards and passing TD record for a freshman. He was comfortably the highest rated quarterback in the country. He was simply spectacular this season as college football’s finest player.
He should be a landslide winner of the Heisman Trophy. Not so much because he was dominant. Not so much because there weren’t other good players. But mainly because there was no obvious challenger to him winning. There is usually some kind of debate that takes place. Not this year. The debate is over who takes second place. That is the reason we have a record six finalists being flown into New York for the presentation ceremony. If we cared who finished as the runner-up, we could have a real spirited debate who it should be.
As it is, I would have Northern Illinois QB Jordan Lynch second. The Huskies best player led them to back-2-back 12-1 regular seasons and broke the single game rushing record by a quarterback not once, but twice and he also shattered the single season rushing record by quarterback. Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel would be my third place. Both of those guys carried their teams this year (and last) and fit into my definition of “best player” in the country. They are not only great, but greatly valuable as well.
Fresno State’s Derek Carr wasn’t invited, which surprises me, because I would have had him 4th. He led the Bulldogs to their first conference title since 1989 meanwhile he also led America in passing yards and touchdowns and would qualify as indispensable to his team.
With that said, the award is about who wins, not who finishes 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th. We have a clear winner. For those who want to talk about character, I challenge that even being a factor in the voting guidelines. How do any of us, anyone that votes, know anything about any of these men? Have you hung out with them? Been around them on a day-2-day basis? Do you have to like somebody for them to get your vote?
The Heisman is a more glamorous MVP trophy. Let’s not pretend it is anything more than that. Let’s not pretend we know who Jameis Winston is or what he does or has done or how he lives his personal life. He was the best college football player this year. Vote for him because of that.
The only question will be can he make it two Heisman Trophies next year?Tuck: Jameis Winston Is Your Heisman Trophy Winner by Mike Tuck
