Tuck: Grading The NFL Coaching Hires
With all but one of the NFL coaching vacancies filled, I figured I’d give my take on what I liked and didn’t.
Replacing: Lovie Smith
Hired: Marc Trestman
Grade: A. The CFL coach has NFL and college experience and had great success on all levels, and should bring some excitement to the Bears offense that desperately needs it.
Replacing: Pat Shurmur
Hired: Rob Chudzinski
Grade: A. Coach Chud is highly praised around the league anywhere he’s served as an assistant. The Browns have money to spend and already a lot of good young pieces under contract and have worst to first potential in the AFC North.
Replacing: Mike Mularkey
Hired: Gus Bradley
Grade: B. The lone defensive coach to be hired, but comes well recommended. Making the defense respectable should push them to the middle, but finding a quarterback is priority number one if they want to be a playoff team.
San Diego Chargers
Replacing: Norv Turner
Hired: Mike McCoy
Grade: B. McCoy might be a great mind, or he may have just fallen into Tebow-mania and Peyton Manning the last couple of years. I am unexcited.
Kansas City Chiefs
Replacing: Romeo Crennel
Hired: Andy Reid
Grade: C. Reid won a lot of games in Philly, but was constantly criticized for how he did it, and now he gets full control over the franchise?
Replacing: Andy Reid
Hired: Chip Kelly
Grade: C. As far as a splash is concerned, this was a cannonball that soaked everyone near the pool, but as far as impact, I am not sure Kelly will succeed with his offense. Not so much the speed part, but the functionality of a full-spread the way he runs it. I think he’ll be back in college within four years.
Replacing: Chan Gailey
Hired: Doug Marrone
Grade: C. Typical Buffalo. Hire the guy that was 25-25 at Syracuse. Yep, he’s local, but not like he is recruiting to the area. And worse, just north of the border there was an offensive guru.
Replacing: Ken Whisenhunt
Hired: Nobody yet
Grade: Incomplete. Won’t matter who they choose unless they get someone to throw Larry the rock.
