I am presenting my All-Star Ballot as fan voting for the 2014 MLB All-Star game wraps up today. Undoubtedly there will be some bad decisions, but admittedly there are some decisions that multiple answers are acceptable. As you’ll see if you haven’t already, some positions are stacked, and others are not.
CATCHER- Sal Perez, Royals
1ST BASE- Miguel Cabrera, Tigers
2ND BASE- Robinson Cano, Mariners
SHORTSTOP- Alexi Ramirez, White Sox
3RD BASE- Kyle Seager, Mariners
OUTFIELD- Mike Trout, Angels
OUTFIELD- Nelson Cruz, Orioles
OUTFIELD- Adam Jones, Orioles
DESIGNATED HITTER- Edwin Encarncion, Blue Jays
STARTING PITCHER- Felix Hernandez, Mariners
Toughest omissions were Jose Altuve at 2B and Jose Abreu at 1B or DH. Both guys will make the team, but only 9 hitters can start. 3B was a battle with Josh Donaldson and Adrian Beltre. Beltre missed some time earlier this year and Rangers are struggling so I punished him slightly and went Seager over Donaldson because of the defensive difference , which is pretty significant. Also seems impossible not to include any Athletics players, but I didn’t. I couldn’t figure a way to put Jose Bautista on the starting team either.
Who starts? Hard not to chose Masahiro Tanaka who has been terrific, but I went with the King.
CATCHER- Jonathon Lucroy, Brewers
1ST BASE- Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks
2ND BASE- Dee Gordon, Dodgers
SHORTSTOP- Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies
3RD BASE- Todd Frazier, Reds
OUTFIELD- Carlos Gomez, Brewers
OUTFIELD- Andrew McCutchen, Pirates
OUTFIELD- Yasiel Puig, Dodgers
DESIGNATED HITTER- Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins
STARTING PITCHER- Adam Wainwright, Cardinals
Toughest omissions didn’t really apply except in trying to decide who should be the starting pitcher. Clayton Kershaw just wrapped up maybe the most dominant June ever by a pitcher, but he missed a big chunk of the season. Johnny Cueto has been amazing too, and Julio Teheran is right in the mix too. Gordon is clearly the biggest surprise, but he’s earned it. Stanton I put at DH just because he isn’t the fielder the others are, it’s not because he was the last choice.
I’m anxious to see what the fans do.
