Timmy Jernigan Drafted by the Baltimore Ravens
Former Florida State nose tackle Timmy Jernigan’s NFL journey has officially begun. Jernigan was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 48th overall pick. Jernigan emerged as one of the most disruptive players in college football last season as he served as the anchor in the middle of FSU’s defense.
Jernigan spent his first two seasons at Florida State as rotational player in the defensive front before becoming a full-time starter as a junior. In his final season Jernigan was a second team all-American selection by the Associated Press and USA Today after finishing with 63 tackles, third on the team, 11 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks.
Arguably the best game of his college career came in his final game as he totaled nine tackles in the National Championship game against Auburn. A strong physical player Jernigan excels at filling the gaps in the middle of the line and stuffing the run.
Jernigan arrived at Florida State as one of the top players in the 2011 recruiting class. A 4-star prospect (according to Rivals.com) out of Lake City, Florida Jernigan was listed as the number two defensive tackle in the country and 29th best player overall.
He was a freshman all-American selection after recording 30 tackles, six for loss, and 2.5 sacks as a reserve defensive tackle. His role expanded as sophomore when he played in all thirteen games, starting two, with 46 tackles, 8 for loss.
As a full-time starter in his junior season Jernigan proved to be one of the most important players on Florida State’s championship team. His ability to clog the middle of the offensive line freed up the linebackers to roam and make plays behind him.
Although he is a little undersized at only 6 feet 2 inches and 299 pounds Jernigan has the potential to be a disruptive forced in the NFL. The Ravens finished 8-8 last season after winning the super bowl in 2013. Jernigan will join C.J. Mosely, who the Ravens selected in the first round. Jernigan will have the chance to learn from former pro bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata who is in his eighth year with the Ravens.
