BREAKING: Tim Tebow Released by the Patriots
The New England Patriots have released former Florida Gators’ quarterback Tim Tebow, as first reported by ESPN.
Tebow was not among 10 players released by the Patriots yesterday, as NFL teams must whittle their rosters down to the 53-man requirement by 6 p.m. ET today.
The former Heisman Trophy winner was considered a ‘long shot’ to make the Partriots’ final roster. He was listed third on the team’s depth chart behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett.
The Patriots, like the majority of NFL teams, typically only carry two quarterbacks on the active roster.
There was some speculation that New England would try to use Tebow in a position other than quarterback, but he remained the team’s third-string signal caller throughout preseason.
He finished his NFL preseason completing 11 of 30 passing attempts for 145 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, and 91 yards rushing.
This is his third NFL team in four seasons. He is not eligible for the practice squad.
