Tiki Barber defends Strahan, calls Sapp ‘an Idiot’

As if the on-going feud between Warren Sapp and Michael Strahan needed any more fuel, Strahan’s former teammate Tiki Barber had some choice things to say about Sapp at a golf outing Monday.
“Warren’s an idiot,” Barber said to the New York Post in response to defensive tackle’s remarks that Strahan was a near-bust and paled in comparison to former Bucs defensive end Simeon Rice. “He just wants to say things to be idiotic.”
Sapp told the Tampa Tribune last week that Strahan paled in comparison to his former Bucs teammate, Simeon Rice. He also implied that Strahan had an easier time getting to the quarterback because of where he lined up.
“Simeon was a better rusher than Michael Strahan any day of the week and twice on Sunday.”
“You know the right tackle is the worst of the five. Strahan played right end his first four years. When they were putting the label on him as a bust, they put ‘B-U-S . OK, let’s transition him on the other side and see if he can play in his fourth year.’”
Barber strongly disagreed.
“I played with Stray for my whole career. He is the greatest of the great. He is a great teammate, he kept things light, but on game day he was as serious as a heart attack and it showed in his play.”
“Warren doesn’t know, never played with him,” Barber said. “I don’t put any credence in his opinion. “I hope Stray doesn’t let it bother him. I don’t think it does.
For comparison’s sake, Strahan compiled 141.5 sacks in his 14-year career, all spent with the Giants. He earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl, was voted NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2001, and was named to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.
Rice went to the Pro Bowl three times in his 12 seasons. He finished all but one of his eight seasons in Tampa with double-digit sacks. He recorded 122.0 sacks with 25 career forced fumbles, but his play tended to be overshadowed by teammates like Sapp and Derrick Brooks and will likely never be mentioned in the Hall of Fame conversation.
Of course this all started when Sapp and Strahan were on the ballot for this year’s Pro Football Hall of Fame voting, the first year of eligibility for both. Sapp edged out Strahan to earn a spot in Canton.
Given the shots Sapp’s taken at Strahan in recent weeks, however, you’d think it was the other way around.
