As the USF men’s golf team prepares for its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament under head coach Chris Malloy, three Bulls set up some postseason plans for themselves.
Chase Koepka, Trey Valentine and Richard James all shot under par in the US Open Local Qualifier Monday, earning berths to the US Open Sectional Qualifier at the end of the season. For Koepka (West Palm Beach, Fla.), it will be his second appearance in a sectional qualifier in the last two years.
Koepka carded a 66 on the par-72 south course at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla., while James (Wales, U.K.) shot a 67. The scores would be the best two of the day at Lake Jovita, as the duo were the only two to shoot under 70.
At the par-72 Indian River Club in Vero Beach, Valentine (Melbourne, Fla.) became the third USF player to qualify, carding a 68.
The Bulls travel to San Antonio this week for the NCAA Regionals, needing to finish in the top five of a 13-team field to reach the NCAA Finals. USF is the fifth seed in the three-day tournament, which begins Thursday.
The Bulls are ranked 30th in the nation, while Koepka enters the tournament ranked 16th nationally by Golfweek. He averaged a full stroke under par this season, becoming the first golfer in USF history to do so.
