The Yankees Dilemma: To Spend, Or Not To Spend
Posted By Matthew Stein On October 4, 2013 @ 10:01 am In MLB,News and Rumors,Sports Media | No Comments
The Yankees are coming off their worst season in years and with Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte retiring, age catching up to Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez facing a drug suspension, the future of the now budget-conscious Yankees is up in the air as they try to get under the $189M luxury-tax threshold.
As we look into the future of the Bronx Bombers, GM Brian Cashman had this to say:
“The only thing I can confidently tell you is when the last name is Steinbrenner, the effort is going to be there in terms of making a full push for having the best team on the field you can possibly have.”
But the question is, would another season of mediocrity — or even a losing record — be worth it if it meant the ability to go back to their free-spending ways a year or two later?
Hal Steinbrenner has said for the better part of a year that while he would like to see the Yankees get below the threshold, he won’t do it if it comes at the expense of putting a contender on the field.
While the Yankees are looking ahead to the future when it comes to the luxury tax, Cashman is quick to point out that all he’s concerned about right now is putting together the best team he can for 2014.
