The Rays’ Financial Plan for Wil Myers
Earlier today on The David Baumann Show, David Baumann broke down the impact of the Tampa Bay Rays call-up of Wil Myers on June 16 and the financial ramifications of it taking place now as opposed to earlier in the season.
Why you should listen : The Tampa Bay Rays called up the red-hot hitting Wil Myers this past weekend from the minor league affiliate Durham Bulls. Myers, hit .286, 14 HR & 57 RBI in 64 games on the AAA level.
Why the call-up now?
By delaying the promotion until AFTER June 15, the Rays essentially claimed an extra season of Myers’ rookie contract. Assuming Myers does not return to the minors, he won’t become eligible for free agency until after the 2019 season. Had he been called up prior to June 15, he’d become a free agent after the 2018 campaign.
Myers will become eligible for arbitration after the 2016 season.
Avid listener Mike Miller (@yankee2479 on twitter) contributed to this report. Mike’s brother Jim Miller is a pitcher for the New York Yankees AAA affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railraiders.
