The Gator Bowl is No More

After many years, the Gator Bowl is no more.

According to WOKV in Jacksonville, the Gator Bowl has a new name. But, that’s not all that’s being changed. They have removed “gator”¬†entirely and it will no longer be played on New Years Day. The President of Gator Bowl Sports has announced that the game will now be known as the TaxSlayer Bowl and it will be played on Jan. 2nd.

The word “gator” is being dropped from the name as a part of a six-year agreement between TaxSlayer.com and the Gator Bowl.

TaxSlayer.com President and CEO Jimmy Rhodes told the Jacksonville radio station that this is a big moment for them.

“TaxSlayer.com recognizes the history of the Bowl’s rich 70 year tradition.¬† It is a legacy in college football and we…are extremely proud to be a part of such a dedicated and professional Bowl family and look forward to building on its historic foundation.”

Starting in 2015, the TaxSlayer Bowl will be televised on ESPN January 2nd. In years past, it’s been played on New Years Day. The game will feature a team from the SEC and an opponent from the Big Ten Conference or the Atlantic Coast Conference.
