The Answer Changed NBA Culture

For over 14 years Allen Iverson was know as “The Answer.” This week arguably the toughest player in NBA history has decided to call it quits. While the past few years have been nothing but agonizing and testing for Iverson, that shouldn’t overshadow the culture change he christened the league with. From the cornrows to the fitted hat, Iverson brought a street ball mentality to the game that resonated with young people like no one else.

On the court Iverson was electrifying and truly defined leaving it all on the floor. Iverson listed at just under 170 pounds averaged 26.7 points and 6.2 assists while playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzles.

Iverson, a former No. 1 overall pick out of Georgetown, was the 1997 Rookie of the Year, a three-time All-NBA First-Team selection, four-time scoring champion and 2001 MVP.

Iverson know for his years in Philadelphia is the franchise leader in 40-point games (76) and 3-pointers (885), and is second behind Hal Greer in points (19,931). He led the 76ers to the 2001 NBA Finals and lost to the Los Angeles Lakers lead by Shaq and Kobe.

The 38-year-old Iverson may be walking away from the game but his impact will last forever.
