Sunday’s match-up between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Washington Redskins will be a tale of two offenses. Robert Griffin III and the Redskins lead the NFL in points scored per game with 33 and the Josh Freeman lead Buccaneers offense ranks 25th in the league with 20 points per game.
The Redskins offense averages 404.3 yards per game with 223.7 yards through the air and an astounding 180.7 yards on the ground. Washington will meet a true challenge with the Buccaneers’ league leading rushing defense, allowing 47.3 yards a game. The Redskins have a two-headed monster at rushing with Alfred Morris averaging 87.7 yards per game and RG3 averaging 69.7 yards per game on the ground. Griffin also has three rushing touchdowns.
The Buccaneers offense has been dreadful through the first three games ranking 21st in the run, averaging 94.7 yards a game and 30th in passing with 149 yards a game. Doug Martin is the best of the worst with his 214 rushing yards and one touchdown. Freeman needs to perform better as he’s ranked near the bottom in most quarterback statistics. Freeman has to work harder at getting the ball to the player makers; Vincent Jackson is averaging 3.3 catches a game. Washington’s 31st ranked passing defense just might be what the doctor ordered for the grounded air-attack of Tampa.
Tampa and Washington are both statistically on the bottom half of the league in special teams, so this is a wash.
The crowd for the Buccaneers will also be a non-factor since the team has not sold 85% of the tickets yet. This means the game will be blacked out in the local area, this is the 15th black out in the last 17 Buccaneer home games. There are currently 2008 tickets for sale on Stubhub.com with the bulk of the tickets going for $35. This is the cheapest you will get to see RG3 all year-long.
The long and the short of it is if the Buccaneers can stop the rush and Freeman can pass for 200 yards they will beat Washington and the RG3 show. If they can’t stop the rush you will see Washington have another 33 point game.
P.S. For those of you wondering the Fox affiliate in Tampa will show the New Orleans-Green Bay game late Sunday afternoon.
