Tampa Bay Lightning Defeat Detroit Red Wings In Shootout

Ben Bishop & Marty St. Louis Lead Way In Lightning Shootout Victory

The Tampa Bay Lightning  (18-10-9 [39 points]) and Detroit Red Wings (15-10-8 [39 points]) were unable to settle their contest in regulation time or overtime.

Kucherov_celebratesIn the shootout Red Wings goalie Jonas Gustavsson thwarted the first five Lightning shooters but Ben Bishop was up to the task in doing the same against the Red Wing shooters.

In the sixth round Martin St. Louis finally put a puck in the net and Bishop stopped Johan Franzen giving the Lightning the well earned two points.

It was the first victory for the Lightning over the Red Wings at the Tampa Bay Times Forum since January 7, 2003.

The Red Wings won the last  three matchups on December 17, 2005, November 13, 2008, and February 17, 2011.  It was the Lightnings 4th straight game earning a point and their 3rd straight overtime game.

The third star of the game was awarded to Nikita Kucherov who scored the Lightnings lone goal, the second star went to Red Wings Jonas Gustavsson who saved 26 of 27 shots, and the first star went to Lightning goalie Ben Bishop who stopped 28 of 29 shots.

The Red Wings scored the games first goal at the 15:04 mark on Kyle Quincey‘s first goal of the season with assist to Gustav Nyquist (4) and Johan Franzen (14).

Nikita Kucherov found the back of the net for his third goal of the season with only 0:44 seconds left in the second period to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lightning will hit the road and take on the New Jersey Devils Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Detroit for a rematch with the Red Wings Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.
