Tampa Bay Lightning Defeat Dallas Stars 4-2

The Tampa Bay Lighting defeated the Dallas Stars by a final score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in Dallas. The victory improves the Bolts to 34-21-5 (73 points) and the loss drops the starts to 28-22-10 (68 points).
Martin St. Louis has been the subject of trade speculation all week but that has not had a negative affect on the Lightning Captain. After netting a pair of goals in the Bolts 3-2 loss Thursday evening to the Nashville Predators he followed it up with another two goal performance Saturday afternoon.
His two points Saturday afternoon give him 972 for his career and bring him to within one point of Andy Bathgate for 84th place on the NHL All-Time Points List.
His performance impressed Jon Cooper, “That kid comes to play, and that’s what you want in a player, And all this speculation of him being moved or asking for a trade, that doesn’t come into one spot of our locker room of trying to win a hockey game.”
It’s often said that when crunch time comes a team needs it star players to stand up and that was true Saturday afternoon, “We needed four goals to win tonight,” Cooper said. “And he had two of them. You need that from one of your go-to guys.”
Much like the Stars game the Bolts jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period on St.Louis 28th goal on the season at the 1:25 mark and later Nate Thompson scored his sixth goal at the 12:09 mark.
The Lightning extended their lead to 3-0 in the second period when St.Louis scored his second goal of the game at the 14:31 mark.
On Thursday night the Lightning saw a 2-0 lead evaporate in the span of 1:11 seconds and the Stars and it seemed like Deja Vu all over again when the Stars answered with a pair of goals in less than four minutes to cut the lead to 3-2 before nearly tying it up in the final seconds of the second period.
“Clearly we were under siege for the second half of that second period,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “But I thought our goalie stood tall. Guys committed to blocking shots and kept pucks out.”
The Stars put intense pressure on the Lightning defense and especially Ben Bishop who like so many times in the 2013-2014 season was up to the task recording 39 saves in picking up his 29th win. As the last line of defense he was plenty busy in the 2nd and 3rd period as the Stars outshot the Bolts 33-10 in that span.
Sami Salo gave the Lightning some breathing room with a rocket slap shot from just inside the blue line at the 7:12 mark. It was only Salo’s second goal of the season and this one was much needed.
