The Tampa Bay Buccaneers unveiled a new logo and new helmet Thursday night before a national audience on NFL Network’s NFL Total Access.

Hall of Famer Warren Sapp and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy were on-hand for the honors, presenting the Bucs’ first uniform changes since 1997. That was back when the team opted for a complete overhaul, retiring Bucco Bruce and creamsicle orange.

The new logo features the trademark ‘skull and swords’ as previous one but the skull gets a more menacing look.

The new helmet features a much larger logo and what Buccaneers co-chairman Edward Glazer described as a “more intimidating presence.”

“This is the first alteration to our logo and helmet since the previous re-design 17 years ago and we believe it sets the stage for our transition into this new, exciting era of Buccaneers football,” Glazer said in a statement.

The  helmet itself is still pewter but appears darker thanks to a hand-painted shading technique using a darker pewter color that runs vertically from the front of the helmet to the crown and along the earholes.

It also features a chrome facemask, the first of any NFL team.

As you can see, these changes are much more subtle than the first transformation. It’s less grunge and less detail, while still keeping the spirit of the modern Buccaneer era.

The team’s full uniform ensemble will be revealed on Wednesday, March 5 during a 2 p.m. press conference.

The team says new merchandise will be available in the coming weeks and will include an exclusive pre-order window for season pass members.
