The Tampa Bay Buccaneers held their second mini-camp practice today. The team spent a large portion of the two-hour practice utilizing ‘play-its’ or ‘situational football,’ which includes rehearsing scenarios like the two-minute drill, third-down, and goal line situations.
Here’s a video recap of practice, including players that stood out:
The ‘hot’ topic, aside from scorching temperatures at One Buc Place, was Mike Glennon signing his rookie contract , which the team announced just before practice began. It’s a deal worth just over $3.1 million.
Glennon had a rough go at it in practice and appeared visibly frustrated with himself. He fumbled the football and struggled at times to find his receivers.
He was picked off by rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks, although that particular play was more of a testament to Banks’ play-making ability. Vincent Jackson still believes the rookie quarterback is progressing nicely.
“This is a system that takes some time to get used to, but he’s doing a good job with it, handling it well. We’re throwing a lot at him and he’s soaking it in,” Jackson said after practice.
“Obviously he’s a big, tall guy, [with] a strong arm. He’s definitely going to add that depth at the position that we need.”
Johnthan Banks’ strong play has certainly garnered its own share of attention, although he said he’s still learning the Buccaneer defense. It’s similar to what they ran at Mississippi State, but the Bucs use different terminology.
“I think I’m doing pretty good for a rookie, out here competing with guys like Vincent Jackson, Mike Williams, [Kevin] Ogletree — those guys have been in the league a while and I’m out here competing with them. I play corner so I’m going to get beat some but I’m out here competing, so that’s the good thing about it.”
Interestingly though, it hasn’t been star cornerback Darrelle Revis whom Banks has leaned on the most during his adjustment in the NFL — it’s been second-year corner and former undrafted free agent Leonard Johnson.
“LJ, man, out of all these guys, he’s probably been the biggest help. Revis has helped me a lot, but LJ has probably been the biggest help because he was in my shoes last year. Everything from last year that he went through, he’s trying to put me through it so I can be prepared.”
