Takes 14 Innings But Rays Down Yankees 10-5
Offense Explodes For Five In 14th To Defeat Yankees 10-5
A day after a day-night doubleheader the Rays needed a solid performance by David Price to give their weary bullpen a rest. They got what they needed as hedelivered seven innings allowing just two earned runs on eight hits striking out eight and walkingnone departing with the Rays ahead 4-2.
Joel Peralta opened the ninth inning but gave up a leadoff single to Brian Roberts. Juan Carlos Oviedo entered the game and retired Yangervis Solarte on a ground out to first which advanced Roberts to second. Kelly Johnson grounded out to Yunel Escobar on the right side of second baseto move Roberts to third with 2-0ut. Oviedo was unable to nail down the save as Jacoby Ellsbury singled to plate Roberts and force extra innings.
Brandon Gomes came in to pitch butbefore delivering a pitch to Derek Jeter attempted to pick off Ellsbury. It appeared that Ellsbury stumbled on the way back to the bag and was tagged out. Joe Maddon challenged the call and the upon review Ellsbury was out.
The Yankees had several opportunities to score off the Rays bullpen but fell victim to some bad baserunning and failure to deliver key hits.
In the 11th inning they had runners at 2nd and 3rd but Ichiro Suzuki grounded out.
In the 12th inning Jacoby Ellsbury singled to lead off and Derek Jeter reached on a fielding error by Heath Bell. Carlos Beltran grounded out and Jeter got hung up in a rundown. The Rays threw back to third to get Ellsbury in a rundown and before they could tag him out Jeter raced around to third. He was stranded there when Alfonso Soriano grounded out.
Brian McCann and Brian Roberts delivered back to back singles to open the 13th inning. Yangervis Solarte grounded out to advance runners to second and third with one out. The Rays pulled Wil Myers into the infield and Brett Gardner grounded out to Sean Rodrigurez. Jacoby Ellsbury was intentionally walked and Derek Jeter grounded out to Heath Bell to end the threat.
Chris Leroux came in to work the 14th for the Yankees and issued a leadoff walk to Desmond Jennings. He came back to strike Evan Longoria out for the first out of the inning. With Wil Myers at the plate Desmond Jennings stole second to get into scoring position. Myers delivered a single to put the Rays on top 6-5 and advanced to second on the throw home.
Sean Rodriguez followed with a double to drive in Myers all the way from first to put the Rays up 7-5. Brandon Guyer who had pinch ran for James Loney delivered an RBI single to plate Rodriguez and put the Rays up 8-5 and he also moved to second on the throw home.
Derek Jeter was 0 for 7 for the first time in his career.
It is expected that the Rays are going to make a roster move to find a way to get another pitcher in the bullpen for tomorrows game.
