Last game- The quest for the undefeated preseason came to a screeching halt for the Jacksonville Jaguars as they were manhandled by the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night, 48-17. The Jags had breakdowns on the offensive line and the tackling was atrocious, leading to the blowout loss.
Top story: Will MJD show up?- Maurice Jones-Drew, the NFL’s leading rusher a season ago is yet to make an appearance at Jaguars camp, but the diminutive dynamo said that he’d like to finish his career as a Jaguar.
Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey isn’t ruling out MJD starting Week 1.
“It depends on him,” Mularkey said. “What kind of shape he’s in. How fast he picks up the system. I’m not going to put him in a position where he has any chance to fail because in the long run, we all fail. I’m not going to expose him to failure. It’s not going to happen. If he’s ready and all those conditioning wise [things], and he picks it up immediately, the faster he can progress, yes. I don’t know where we’re at right now. I have no idea.”
Potential bigger name cuts? In Mike Mularkey’s offense the fullback doesn’t seem to be irreplaceable so that puts players such as Greg Jones and Brock Bolen on the chopping block. Neither has had a stellar camp and Jones is scheduled to earn $3.4 million.
Last game- It’s a good thing that preseason results don’t matter because the Dolphins fell to 0-3 with their 23-6 drubbing at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons. Miami was bad on both sides of the football as the visiting Falcons really dominated the game.
Top story: Vontae Davis traded to Indianapolis- Miami dealt the former first-round pick (2010) to Indianapolis for their 2013 second-round pick. Davis seemed to be in Kevin Coyle and Joe Philbin’s doghouse throughout camp and the team is getting solid value in return. The Colts are expected to be near last place this season in the AFC South and the pick will likely be in the Top 40.
“Bottom line with this move today is we got better as a football team,” Colts general manager Ryan Grigson stated. “That is always the goal each day for this organization. From the first time he stepped on the field at Illinois as a freshman or in the National Football League as a rookie, you knew Vontae was a special talent. Now he has a chance under Coach [Chuck] Pagano and this coaching staff to reach not only his potential as a football player, but as a person as well. That is our collective goal moving forward.”
Potential bigger name cuts?- Veteran quarterback David Garrard will likely receive some sort of injury settlement as his services are no longer necessary as the team named Ryan Tannehill its starting quarterback last week.
Last week- The Bucs made what they hope is a statement as they defeated the defending AFC Champion New England Patriots, 30-28. Tampa’s starters had a comfortable lead over the New England starters when they left the game in the third quarter.
Top story: Doug Martin likely to start- Bucs rookie running back Doug Martin received the majority of the first-team snaps over LeGarrette Blount in Friday’s preseason victory. Martin is the more explosive of the two backs and has held up in pass protection.
Teams don’t trade up into the first round for running backs and don’t play them right away. Martin has been the better option since Day 1 and the team has much more invested in his success.
Potential bigger name cuts? There likely won’t be any surprise cuts for the Bucs as the team has major depth concerns. Dallas Clark is a name to keep an eye on.
