Sunday Skate: Sophomore Slump, Bolts To Watch, and Malone News

Sunday Skate is a weekly feature that gathers and  recaps some of the articles of the week.

It seems that Ryan Malone is still going to plead “not guilty” to his arrest of DUI and possession of cocaine. His explanation is a bit interesting and baffling. Malone claims that someone slipped the cocaine in his jean pocket. Malone didn’t finish the season with the Bolts as he entered himself into a rehab program jointly run by the NHL and NHLPA.

Per the Tampa Bay Times’ Joe Smith

Malone told Visser he didn’t believe the officer planted the drugs on him, according to the documents, but he was “baffled” because he was wearing the same jeans for three days.

That’s definitely a new way to plead a defense in a drug charge. However, Malone has garnered some interest from teams and could sign with one if his legal troubles don’t prevent him from doing so.

Could the Bolts suffer a sophomore slump?

The Lightning look really good on paper but realistically some of the players could end up with a sophomore slump.  They had bright players like Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Ben Bishop who helped them get to the playoffs for the first time since 2011. But what if those players slump? It does tend to happen now and then in hockey. Check it out here.

Who is Anton Stralman?

Anton Stralman

Lightning GM Steve Yzerman made a lot of moves to clear up cap space. One of the beneficiaries of that cap space is defenseman Anton Stralman.  Stralman took many by surprise as he had a very impressive playoff. He was one of the bright spots for the New York Rangers and he definitely caught Yzerman’s attention, enough to trade a bunch of roster players. Just who is he?
