Strong tops Texas list of new coaches
The two men who are reportedly on the short list for head coaching job at the University of Texas are not big name coaches. They are however, outstanding recruiters and two of the best young coaches in the business. The names said to be most linked to the opening in Austin are former Gator defensive coordinator and present Louisville head coach Charlie Strong and Baylor’s Art Briles.
So what puts Strong at the head of the class in Austin?
He’s not as sexy a prospect as Saban, Meyer or Harbaugh. But he’s not as young as James Franklin, not as deflating as Jim L. Mora and he would not give Texas that incestuous, slumming it feeling that would come from poaching a Baylor or Oklahoma State coach. Strong recruits well. He has coordinated national title caliber defenses. With the right offensive staff and quarterback, he would do a very good job.
One thing Texas feels in their favor is that now would be a great time to get Strong to make a move. His present team Louisville is moving up a level of competition in the ACC. Star QB Teddy Bridgewater, will most likely be headed for the NFL Draft. So if Texas were to call then Strong would be a fool not to run to Austin as fast as his legs could carry him.
As for his being about to get out of his contract with Louisville money would not be an issue. Texas could easily take care of Strong’s $5 million dollar buyout. Strong is a great candidate and he could be a fine coach in Texas.
