Spring Training Report: Marlins’ Cishek Feels Pressure

Miami Marlins’ reliever Steve Cishek doesn’t like losing. Last year he converted his last 29 saves and as a result of replacing Heath Bell, he got a big contract worth almost $4 million.
As the fourth-highest paid players on the Marlins’ team, it only seems fair that he would feel the pressure to perform well.
Some would expect that since Cishek essentially took Bell’s job, there would be harsh words exchanged or grudges to be had but that’s not the case at all. In fact, Cishek says that Bell has always been friendly and they keep in touch. But, Cishek knows that this friendship doesn’t prevent his status on the team from turning sour, just as Bell’s did.
Cishek told the Miami Herald, “If you blow one save, people remember that. You’re the worst pitcher ever.”
Last season, Miami lost 100 games and without Cishek’s assistance, there could have been more. To win games, you must have a solid closer. Manager Mike Redmond knows that saying, “It definitely could have been a lot worse.”
Cishek has to stay focused and do his job. He’s working hard now to perfect his fastball and keep his successful reputation. He says he wants to learn how to throw a strike and “bury it.” Hopefully he can learn before Opening Day.
The Marlins face the Boston Red Sox Tuesday afternoon in Fort Myers.
