Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas makes switch from Barcelona to Chelsea
Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who could start for the defending World Cup champs in a false-nine role, was completed a transfer from Barcelona to Chelsea. The news comes as a bit of a surprise, with Fabregas still being a fan favorite at Chelsea’s crosstown rivals, Arsenal, after spending a number of years with the Gunners.
But Fabregas made sure to clarify that Arsenal had turned down the opportunity to bring back the midfielder, likely because of the signing of Mesut Ozil the summer before who plays a similar role.
“I do feel that I have unfinished business in the Premier League and now is the right time for me to return,” Fabregas said according to the Daily Mail. “Yes, everyone knows that Arsenal had the first option to sign me. They decided not to take this option and therefore it wasn’t meant to be. I wish them well in the future.”
Chelsea, who finished third in the Premier League each of the last two seasons, have been busy this summer. On top of the move for Fabregas, Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is heavily rumored to be making a move to Stamford Bridge as well.
Fabregas seemed excited about the opportunity to join the Blues, saying the team shares a lot of his goals in soccer.
“They (Chelsea) matching my footballing ambitions with their hunger and desire to win trophies,” Fabregas said. “They have an amazing squad of players and an incredible manager. I am fully committed to this team and I can’t wait to start playing.”
The deal for Fabregas was for five years, with the midfielder supposedly earning 150,000 pounds-per-week, and cost Chelsea 30 million pounds.
